1. Huawei Kepler MateBook D 14 (Refurbished)
The Huawei Kepler MateBook D 14 is a 2018 Huawei laptop that is currently available refurbished for $500 on Amazon.com. This is quite an accomplishment considering Huaweis struggles in entering the US markets over the past few years due to trade embargos and trade wars waged by US politicians. Fortunately, due having an impressive arsenal of hardware to begin with, the Kepler MateBook D 14 still holds up performance wise quite well even compared to more modern laptops.
At its core the MateBook D 14 is powered by a quad core Ryzen 5 2500U CPU including AMD Radeon RX Vega 8 graphics, 8GB of RAM, and a 256GB SSD hard drive. Even by 2020s standard these specs are no small feat, outperforming many brand new $500 laptop models on the market today. The main drawback, however, is that the Huawei Kepler MateBook D 14 is only offered refurbished instead of brand new, which can open up a can of worms in terms of expired warranties and potential laptop failures due to extended use.
If you are lucky enough to get a well refurbished model, the MateBook D 14 comes highly recommended. Worst case, after all, you can simply return it for a refund if you are not happy with the quality.
- CPU: AMD R5
- GPU: AMD Radeon Vega 8 (integrated)

- Hard drive: 256 GB SSD

2. Huawei MateBook 13 2020 AMD
Although prices vary, the Huawei MateBook 13 2020 AMD based laptop is the closest we will get to a fully fledged 2020 Huawei laptop that comes in anywhere near the $500 mark (it may push around $600 unless on special). This is only thanks to its smaller screen and AMD hardware. Don’t let the AMD hardware fool you though – the included AMD Ryzen 5 3500U CPU is a beast in its own right and easily trumps any Intel i3 or Intel Celeron processors by a mile. Best of all, the AMD Ryzen 5 3500U CPU comes equipped with high performing AMD Radeon RX Vega 8 graphics which is one of the best integrated graphics on the market for any gaming laptop under $500.
On the design front, the MateBook 13 has all of the benefits of all of Huawei’s other 2020 based models including their ultra-stylish Macbook like finish and attractive chiclet keyboard along with an ultra-thin profile and thin screen bezels. The bottom line – it not only performs extremely well for the price, it also looks damn good doing it.
- CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 3500U
- GPU: AMD Radeon Vega 8 (integrated)
- RAM: 8GB or 16GB
- Hard drive: 256 or 512 GB PCIe SSD
- Screen: 2160 x 1440, 200 PPI
- Weight: 2.88 pounds
3. Huawei MateBook Signature Edition 2 in 1
Due to its multipurpose design, we have only included the Huawei MateBook Signature Edition 2 in 1 at the bottom of our list. The reason for this is that despite its laptop functionality, the 2 in 1 is still designed with flexibility in mind and may lack certain laptop only features that someone looking only for a laptop and not a tablet may miss.
That said, the 2 in 1 MateBook is certainly not without its perks. The first and foremost, of course, is its seemless tablet mode, which can make browsing or work a lot more comfortable in many situations where you might want to ditch your keyboard for a touchscreen experience instead.
Unfortunately, the 2 in 1 MateBook takes quite a big hit when it comes to performance as a sacrifice for its flexibility as a tablet. The included Intel Core M5, whilst incredibly power efficient, is only around a third of the speed of the Ryzen 5 CPU’s in the two laptops above. This rules out the MateBook 2 in 1 for any users looking to used advanced applications and do more than the most basic of tasks.
However, if you are only looking for a basic laptop for daily browsing and other simple tasks, then the MateBook Signature Edition 2 in 1 may offer some distinct advantages because of its extremely portable and lightweight design, touchscreen and fully fledged tablet capabilities.
- CPU: Intel Core M5
- GPU: Intel HD Graphics 515 (integrated)
- RAM: 4GB
- Hard drive: 128GB SSD
- Screen: 12-inch, 2160 x 1440
- Weight: 1.4 pounds
